There is a lot of confusion about certain produce pertaining to what category they belong to. Tomatoes, for example. Fruit or vegetable? The confusion is warranted because there is a botanical definition that is in contrast to culinary acceptance and uses.
Botanically speaking, a fruit is any seed bearing structure that develops from the ovary of a flower. Technically tomatoes, squash, even eggplant are all fruits. Whereas vegetables are all other edible parts of a plant such as roots, stems, and leaves. Hence potatoes, spinach, celery and so forth are all vegetable.
